Description
Period staircase and landing with two windows at Canonbury Tower, Canonbury Place, Islington. The Tudor tower, which is one of the surviving parts of a manor house built between 1509 and 1532 for the Canons of St Bartholomew's Priory of West Smithfield, is the oldest building in Islington. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536-41 the manor house was granted as residence to Thomas Cromwell. The tower was constructed in the 1590s by Sir John Spencer, the Lord Mayor of London, who also extended the rebuilt the manor house. Its renowned residents have included Sir Francis Bacon and novelist Oliver Goldsmith. From 1953 to 2003 the Tower Theatre Company was based there, and now the tower serves as the premises of the Canonbury Tower Charitable Trust and the Canonbury Masonic Research Centre. The Tower is Grade ll* listed, listing number 1280424.
