Shops on Albert Road
Description
Albert Road is a spinal route running parallel to this stretch of the Thames, which served the substantial commercial and residential development built around the Royal Docks during the late nineteenth century. Parts of the road were either in North Woolwich, Kent, or East Ham, Essex, originally having sequences of street numbering in two directions, but all is now within the London Borough of Newham. This view shows part of a terrace of shops that were on the north side of Albert Road just to the east of where the Royal Standard pub still stands today. Most obvious to the right of view is a tea and coffee shop which by the time of the 1901 Census was run by Elizabeth Crowe, originally from Lincolnshire and widow of Alfred George Crowe, possibly assisted by at least one of their teenage children. Glazed patterned screens in the shop window offer diners some privacy and a tray with a tea set can be seen in the window, which also has posters inviting people to 'stop and dine' on a good dinner for 6d (six pence), with a choice of chops and steaks, cut from the joint. The bread and biscuit bakery next door at number 108, partly obscured by the awning shading its south facing window, was also run by a widow, Rose Keszler, originally from Bavaria. A range of loaves and other baked goods can be seen in the shop window and the pillar between the two shops displays adverts for R Whites Ginger Beer 1d, Soda Water, and Ginger Ale, above which is a decorative moulding, repeated on the other side of the awning. The butcher's shop at number 110, partially visible to the left of view and also shaded, was run by Henry Sauerland, originally from Whitechapel. A banner is painted in the brickwork above the first floor windows with large letters spelling a part visible statement '....PING SUPPLIED.' Sadly, these shops were badly damaged by bombing during the World War II and the site is now forms the rear gardens of a terrace of modern houses in Albert Walk.
