Title
Victoria Embankment from Hungerford Bridge
Description
View of Victoria Embankment, Westminster, looking north from Hungerford Bridge towards Cleopatra's Needle and Waterloo Bridge. The distinctive and recently completed Cecil Hotel dominates on the left, the largest hotel in Europe when completed. It was later demolished and Shell Mex House was built on the site. Beyond is the Savoy Hotel with its brash rooftop advertising. Somerset House dominates the distance and Cleopatra's Needle can be seen. On what is clearly a fine sunny day, a paddle steamer pulls away from Charing Cross pier, the ladies in bonnets or with parasols to protect them from the strong sunlight. Another paddle steamer is putting out smoke near Waterloo Bridge.
