London Underground headquarters in Broadway
Description
A view of 55 Broadway, Westminster, the headquarters of London Underground. The building also contains the entrance to St James's Park Station, now moved to the apex shown in the picture, and to a shopping mall. The cruciform building has seven storeys including a two-storey podium covering the whole site. Several cars are parked in the street including a Rover 2000 at the left, and several pedestrians can be seen. Number 55 Broadway was built in 1927-9 to the design of Charles Holden as the headquarters of Underground Electric Railways of London Ltd (UERL) under Lord Ashfield and Frank Pick, later of London Transport. It includes sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Allan Wyon, Henry Moore, Samuel Rabinovitch, Eric Aumonier and Alfred Gerrard. It was Grade I listed in 1970; listing number 1219790.
