Title
Cheviot House in Commercial Road
Description
Cheviot House, 227-233 Commercial Road, Stepney. This seven-storey Art Deco Style, steel-framed building with curved corners and fluted stonework around doorways, was built in 1937 for Kornberg & Segal textile merchants. The building, with its flag pole topped corner towers, was used by Tower Hamlets as council offices from 1951. Saved from demolition in 2012, with campaigners arguing its importance to the East End's Jewish rag trade heritage, it has since been renovated and converted into apartments.
