Title
The Royal Female Orphanage, Church Road, Beddington: the hall
Description
The Female Orphan Asylum opened in 1758. It was for young girls who had lost their father or both parents. The home offered accommodation, education and training for domestic service. It was founded with the support of John Fielding, a blind social reformer and magistrate, who with his half-brother had established the Bow Street Runners, London’s first professional police force. The Asylum quickly outgrew its original location in a former Hercules Pillars Inn in Lambeth and the Asylum was rebuilt in the 1820s. In 1864, the home moved to Carew Manor in Beddington Park, Sutton. The estate had previously belonged to the Carew family since Tudor times, but they had lost their fortune in the 1850s. The house dated from 1709. However, the Great Hall with its hammer beam roof, which is depicted in the photograph, dated back to medieval times. During the Second World War the children were evacuated to Cornwall. Then the home re-located to High Wycombe and remained there until it closed in 1968. The Beddington buildings have survived and are used as a school and local council offices nowadays.
