Stockwell Orphanage, Clapham Road: chapel from north west
Description
The photograph depicts Stockwell Orphanage’s chapel. The home was Christian but was non-denominational. The Orphanage opened in 1869 and was founded by Charles Spurgeon. It was able to accommodate 250 children, aged between 6 and 10 years old. Originally the home only accommodated boys who had lost their fathers. The boys lived in small separate family style groups under the care of a matron. In 1879, an additional wing was built to accommodate girls. The orphanage remained open until 1939, at the onset of the Second World War, the children were moved to St David’s, a large house in Wray Park Road, Reigate, Surrey. In 1951, the school re-located to new purpose-built premises at Park Road, Birchington, Kent and finally closed in 1979. The original buildings have now been demolished and replaced with Platanos College, formerly known as Stockwell Park High School, and the Stockwell Park Estate. The charity continues to provide support to young people and their families and is now known as Spurgeons.
