Title
Hornchurch Children's Homes, 117 Hornchurch Road, Romford: cottage
Description
Hornchurch children’s home was opened in 1889 by the Shoreditch Guardians of the Poor. It was built in the cottage homes model, where children were looked after in family sized group homes run by house parents. It was laid out like a street, with 11 detached 2-storey cottages, each one accommodating 30 children. There were also separate schools for boys and girls and infants, a swimming pool, a band room, stores, workshops and an infirmary. Between 1930 and 1965, the home was run by the London County Council (L.C.C.). The home closed in 1984 and has been replaced with a new housing estate.
