Text in manuscript pencil on original watercolour says: "Smiths Dust Hill - end of Gray's Inn Lane Kings Cross now. Fleet and Battle Bridge." It stood north of the point where Gray's Inn Road meets Euston Road, in the vicinity of King's Cross Station. This area was formerly known as Battle Bridge.

The dust heap was created from the mid-eighteenth century by Harrison's a local brickmaking firm, the ash and dust was mixed with clay to make bricks. Later it appears to have been known as 'Smith's'. Sources give the date of removal of the dust heap as either 1826 or 1848, so it may well have existed at the time when the artist was active in his career. Originally this watercolour was dated as 1799, but there is no evidence for this.
