Description
Exterior and general surroundings of St James' Chapel, Hampstead Road. Gardens were used as a burial ground for the parish of St James, Piccadilly 1790-1853. In 1887 the majority of the monuments and tombstones were removed and St James opened as a public garden. Demolished for HS2 railway. The presumed burial place of Bill Richmond (1763-1829). Born into slavery in America Richmond spent most of his life in England and became, arguably, one of the first black sports celebrities. He later ran a boxing academy in London.
