Plough Inn, Carey Street
Description
Watercolour of the Plough Inn public house, Carey Street, Westminster. Amongst previous landlords of this pub was John Gully. It is fair to say that Gully lived a varied life. When his Bath butcher’s shop business failed in 1805 he was imprisoned for debt. A friend, the prizefighter Henry Pearce (nicknamed “The Game Chicken”) visited him in prison. A boxing match between the two was arranged in the prison and as a result of his victory Gully’s debts were settled and he was released. A rematch later in the year (October 1805) was attended by a huge crowd, including the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV). On this occasion Pearce won after over one and a quarter hours of combat. In 1807 he recorded two victories against Bob Gregson, “the Lancashire Giant”. Like many other boxers, then and since, he became a pub landlord, of the Plough Tavern. On his retirement from the ring he became a race horse owner, with considerable success. He also turned to politics and was MP for Pontefract, Yorkshire from 1832-1837. He was married twice, having twenty-four children, twelve with each wife.
