Description
Portrait of John Gully (1783-1863). It is fair to say that Gully lived a varied life. When his Bath butcher’s shop business failed in 1805 he was imprisoned for debt. A friend, the prizefighter Henry Pearce (nicknamed “The Game Chicken”) visited him in prison. A boxing match between the two was arranged in the prison and as a result of his victory Gully’s debts were settled and he was released. A rematch later in the year (October 1805) was attended by a huge crowd, including the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV). On this occasion Pearce won after over one and a quarter hours of combat. In 1807-1808 he recorded two victories against Bob Gregson, “the Lancashire Giant”. Like many other boxers, then and since, he became a pub landlord, of the Plough Tavern in Carey Street, Westminster. On his retirement from the ring he became a race horse owner, with considerable success. He also turned to politics and was MP for Pontefract, Yorkshire from 1832-1837. He was married twice, having twenty-four children, twelve with each wife.
