Description
John 'Jack' Broughton (c1703-1789), known as the father of English boxing. Apprenticed as a Thames waterman, he won the 1730 Doggett's Coat and Badge boat race. He became a pupil of James Figg, and was champion from 1729 (some say 1738) until 1750. In 1743 he drew up a set of rules for the sport that were regarded as definitive for around 100 years. He also taught boxing at his arena known as Broughton's Amphitheatre in Oxford Road near to Oxford Street. His gravestone inscription at Westminster Abbey reads "Mr John Broughton, Champion Prizefighter of England, Died Jan 8th 1789, Aged 86 years". The celebrated sculptor Rysbrack used him as a model for the arms of his statue of Hercules.
