Buildings in Florence Street
Description
General view of buildings in Florence Street, Islington, from Upper Street. Businesses include Norman Stanley Parkes estate agent, and the Upper Street Service Station. That petrol station stands on the site of what was the Vestry Hall of St Mary’s, Islington, which was built in 1859/1860 and was later used as a Town Hall until the present Islington Town Hall was built nearby in 1925. The Florence Tavern public house, at 50 Florence Street, is beyond the petrol station. It closed around 2013 and was later converted to commercial use. After retiring from his career as a boxer, Jack Burke (‘The Irish Lad’, 1861-1897) was landlord there from November 1895 until the next year. He had started as a bare-knuckle fighter on Hackney Marshes and went on to win the English and World middleweight championships. He fought widely overseas, including in USA against John L. Sullivan (‘The Boston Strong Boy’), Jack Dempsey (‘The Nonpareil’, real name John Kelly), and James J. Corbett (‘Gentleman Jim’). Parked cars.
