Title
Electric Avenue Market
Description
Electric Avenue Market at Atlantic Road, Brixton. Electric Avenue was opened in 1888 and was the first street market to be lit by electric lighting. Eddy Grant immortalised the street in his 1983 song of the same name. Thus image shows a busy market with stalls and fresh produce including pineapples. On the railway bridge is an advert for Collier's 'Brixton's Finest Furnishing Store: Only the Best in Furniture'. In the distance is a Tesco supermarket. Other signs include 'For the Best Value Visit the Victor'. A woman in a check pea coat and bag is being served by a stallholder in a flat cap, behind is an old man with hat, long coat and cigarette as a woman in knee-high boots approaches with pram. By the pineapple stall is a woman in glasses, plaid coat, scarf and gloves clutching a purse as she waits by a woman in a hat. In the background is a goods truck.
