Buckingham Palace
Description
Front elevation of Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Westminster, showing the original east facade as designed by John Nash in 1826 and completed by Edward Blore in 1829, before the redesign of 1913. Buckingham Palace became the principal Royal residence in 1837 on the accession of Queen Victoria. When widowed in 1861, the Queen withdrew from public life and left Buckingham Palace to live at Windsor Castle, Balmoral Castle, and Osborne House. It was not until the accession of Edward VII in 1901 that new life was breathed into the palace, and in 1913 its front elevation was renovated, redesigned and refaced for King George V by Sir Aston Webb, the way it looks today. Still the official royal residence and administrative headquarters and one of the most recognisable landmarks, Buckingham Palace is a Grade I listed building, listing number 1239087.
