Description
The 'Dunford Portrait'. A portrait of William Shakespeare copied from 'the newly discovered picture painted from the life, now in the possession of the publisher' (James Dunford). Dunford's claims that this is a genuine portrait of Shakespeare were subsequently discredited and it was revealed that he had created the new image prior to publication in 1815 using the Chandos Portrait to ensure a likeness.
