Title
House on Tulse Hill
Description
View of a three-storey detached house with basement at 179 Tulse Hill, Norwood, with a central front porch supported by pillars. To the left is a single-storey annex. It was one of a row of grand detached buildings constructed in this area during the mid-1800s. In 1891 it was occupied by Thomas Hopton a timber merchant, his wife, three sons, two daughters and two servants. These houses were demolished in the 1970s and replaced with modern, more modest houses. Tulse Hill was originally known as Lower Tulse Hill Road, and was named after Sir Henry Tulse who was Lord Mayor of London in 1683-84.
