View of Stepney Green
Description
A view along Stepney Green, Stepney with the railings and trees of Stepney Green Gardens, on the left with parked cars in the foreground, including a Ford Capri and a Morris Minor. Stepney Green Dwellings and Milrood House can be seen beyond the park. Stepney Green Dwellings, a tenement block built in 1896, were erected by the Four Per Cent Industrial Dwellings Company to provide housing for the poor, including many Jews. The Stepney Green Clock Tower is just visible on the right hand side. This Grade II listed clock tower was originally erected in Burdett Road in 1913 and moved here in 1934. It commemorates Stanley B Atkinson 1873-1910, Stepney Borough Councillor. A telephone box, the Stepney Green Drinking Fountain commemorating Jewish Philanthropist Leonard Montefiore, and the now demolished Redcoat School can be seen in the distance. A football pitch, part of Stepney Green Park now occupies the site of the school.
