Description
View of Trafalgar Gardens recreation ground, Stepney, looking north from the grounds of St Dunstan's Rectory on White Horse Lane. Originally named Stepney Square, it was renamed Trafalgar Square after Nelson's victory of 1805, the first of four such squares in London. The circular garden was replaced by a rectangular garden and opened to the public in 1885 as Trafalgar Square Garden, the name changed again to Trafalgar Gardens in 1937. It is now entirely hard paved and used as playground with a block of basketball courts behind high fencing. Plot bounded by the high chain link fence on the right-hand side is now occupied by the Stepney Green Maths, Computing and Science College.
