Dunstan Houses in Stepney Green
Description
A view of Dunstan Houses, Stepney Green, Stepney, taken from Hayfield Passage, with Stepney Green Gardens and a telegraph pole in the foreground. Dunstan Houses, five-storey Victorian red brick dwellings, were built by the East End Dwellings Company Ltd and completed in 1899. The East End Dwellings Company was formed in the early 1880s by the Vicar of St Jude's, Whitechapel, the Reverend Samuel Augustus Barnett. The intention of the company was to provide housing for the poor, including those whom other philanthropic housing companies often avoided, such as casual day labourers. The dwellings copper dome can be seen in the distance on the corner with Cressy Place.
