Description
A view of a panelled room at Upton House, Upton Lane, Forest Gate. Part of wood panelling is missing, exposing the brickwork. Damaged plaster ceiling, rubble on floor. Large ceramic butler sink with a wooden draining board in the corner. Joseph Lister, who first used antiseptic in surgery, was born at Upton House in 1827. Upton House later became the vicarage and parish rooms for St Peter's church, after being purchased by the Diocese of St Albans in 1885. The house ceased to be a vicarage in 1959 and was demolished in 1968. In the 1970s a block of flats called Joseph Lister Court and adjoining car park was built on the site.
