Australia Gate in Birdcage Walk
View of Australia Gate at Birdcage Walk by Buckingham Palace, Westminster. A Portland stone wall with balustrade columns lines the walk with Australia Gate at the end. Two columns, one higher than the other: the lower is topped with a lantern and the other has a plinth with a sculpted figure of a boy embracing a shield with one arm and a kangaroo with the other. Underneath on the column is a garland with 'Australia' written in the centre. There is a wrought iron gate between the columns. It was designed by Thomas Brock and given by the people of the Dominion of Australia in 1908 in honour of the recently deceased monarch, Queen Victoria. A couple walk by the gate.
