Title
Lord Raglan beer house in Chrisp Street
Description
A cart loaded with beer kegs is stationed outside the Lord Raglan beer house at number 100 Chrisp Street, Poplar, the heavy horses feeding from nose-bags. Further up the road behind them, a dog sniffs in the gutter in front of Harris Bach's grocery shop at numbers 92-94 Chrisp Street. Half of the shop is shuttered off; a shopper in a hat and winter overcoat pauses to look at the goods for sale on a trestle spilling out into the pavement. The row of shops stretching to the south-east towards Willis Street, between numbers 62-84 Chrisp Street, are visible in the distance. Several pedestrians and, possibly, a man riding a bicyle are also discernible. There is an ornate cast-iron street lamp and in the foreground to the right, a single garment swings from the railing of an unseen shop. George Sweetland's butchers shop at number 96, with its white domed fascia, can be seen next door to Bach's grocery. The position of the Lord Raglan is signalled by the pub light hanging on an iron bracket over the entrance. On the left at 102 Chrisp Street, set back from the road by a wide forecourt, the fishmonger C Drew displays an open stall of wet and dried fish. Next door at number 104, the former premises of Vaughan and Taylor are closed and the entrance boarded up. None of these buildings still exist. Chrisp Street has been comprehensively redeveloped and the site formerly occupied by the buildings at numbers 92-104 Chrisp is now Chrisp Street Health Centre.
