View of Wick Lane
Description
View of Wick Lane, Bow, looking towards St Mark's Church in Cadogan Terrace. Prefabricated housing in the park with a police telephone box, van and cart, and unusual metal street lamp post can be seen in the background. On the left are double wooden gates leading to timber yards belonging to J. and W. Myers and Sons Ltd, timber merchants and importers. Piles of timber are in view. Beyond are public toilets and the Church of St Mark, Victoria Park, which was built in the Gothic style in 1872, with tower and clock. Queen Victoria presented a bell to the church in 1873. Despite suffering bomb damage during World War II the church survived but was later demolished and re-built in a modern style in 1973-76. The new building was later used as a Montessori nursery. The timber yard on the far side later became a garden centre and in the 1980s-1990s housing was built on the yard on the Wick Lane side of the bridge. The prefabs and police box were later removed from the park.
