The Windsor Castle Public House, King Street
Description
Front elevation of the Windsor Castle Public House on 134 King Street, Hammersmith and Fulham. The Windsor Castle is a three-storey brick building with an elaborate wall-mounted lamp, and a balcony filled with flowers. Just above is a plague claiming license to play music publicly originating to the 25th year of the reign of King George II (1785). The ground floor includes marbled pilasters and a fascia containing the legend 'Hannah', the Landlord in 1908. To the left open stable doors can be found with advertisement of services, including horse shoeing, stabling and warehouse space. To the right is the entrance to the hotel and coffee room, and advertisement boards running up the side of the building. These advertise 'Rose Lime Juice', Yorkshire relish, and the 1910 Japan-Britain exhibition. A standalone sign with a curlicue design contains the name of the Public House as well as Sich & Co, which manages the Windsor Castle. In the foreground, two carts functioning as a clothes stall and a wafer stand are manned by two children and an adult. To the left of the Windsor Castle is single-storey building with a door above ground level. Writing on the wall advertises a fair in the building on Whit Monday. The building may originate to the late eighteenth-century at least, although it was demolished and rebuilt soon after World War Two to extend the building to the street. Since then the Windsor castle has closed and now functions as two commercial units. This image is a sharper version of SC_PHL_02_0983_2642.
