Description
View of the eastern half of the front façade of 41 Lothbury, City of London. Viewed from the junction of Throgmorton Street and Lothbury. This building was designed by architects Mewes and Davis. Built between 1923 and 1931 for the Westminster Bank (formerly the London and Westminster Bank) it replaced the existing nineteenth-century headquarters designed by Charles Robert Cockerell. Extending along the curve of Lothbury from Tokenhouse Yard to Angel Court, the new building was seven storeys high (including two attic storeys) and faced with Portland stone. It was Grade II listed in 1977; listing number 1079136. The curved corner of 1 Bartholomew Lane (occupied by Sun Alliance and London Insurance at this time) can also be seen. Some scaffolding covers the east end of 41 Lothbury and demolition appears to have taken place to the east of Angel Court, probably just prior to its redevelopment.
