Description
Front elevation and gates of Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Westminster, with a soldier from the King's Guard standing outside. This is the original east elevation as designed by John Nash in 1826 and completed by Edward Blore in 1829, before Sir Aston Webb's redesign of 1913. The elaborate forecourt gates, piers, railings and lamps were designed in 1901-11 by Sir Aston Webb as part of his Victoria Memorial scheme; the piers were an elaboration of Blore's earlier design of 1847-50. They are all Grade I listed, listing number 1239251. This photograph was taken during the reign of King Edward VII whose accession breathed new life into the palace after it had been left unoccupied since 1861, when Queen Victoria's withdrew from public life. Still the official royal residence and administrative headquarters and one of the most recognisable landmarks, Buckingham Palace is a Grade I listed building, listing number 1239087.
