Title
Charrington's Seaborne Coal Wharf, 2 Broad Street, Stepney showing a steamer, a Dutch boat and barges.
Description
Charrington, Sells, Dale & Co were coal and coke merchants and briquette (a block of compressed coal dust) manufacturers. A steamship is being unloaded at the Coal Wharf, and in the foreground a sailing ship called Johanna and several barges are moored next to the Shadwell fish market. The market was demolished in 1920 to make way for King Edward VII Memorial Park which was officially opened in 1922 by George V. The coal warehouses were redeveloped and became part of an extended Free Trade Wharf before eventually being demolished in the early 1980s for the Free Trade Wharf residential development.
