Title
Holborn Viaduct pavilion in Farringdon Street
Description
Front elevation of 41 Farringdon Street, City of London. Holborn Viaduct was built between 1863 and 1869. City surveyor William Haywood was the architect and the engineer was Rowland Mason Ordish. Pedestrian access between the two street levels was effected via four pavilions, at each side and either end, containing staircases for access from the viaduct to Farringdon Street below. The parapets of the pavilions on the south side were adorned with figurative statues to represent commerce and agriculture by sculptor Henry Bursill. The ground floor is occupied by an employment agency called Jobs Galore. Scaffolding can be seen outside number 40. A telephone box is nearby and vehicles are parked outside both buildings.
