Title
Victoria Embankment in Charing Cross Tube Station
Description
View on a wet winter's day showing the front elevation of Charing Cross (now Embankment) tube station to the left and then Hungerford House, Victoria Embankment, Westminster. The latter is Grade II listed, listing number 1237857, and was built in 1900 by the LCC as an electricity generating station for street lighting, in what is called Arts and Crafts Free Style Baroque. Above the main entrance is a semicircular pediment with a high relief sculpture and the roof has dormer windows and a cupola vent on the ridge. Either side of the impressive entrance to the tube station are inscriptions for the 'Bakerloo, Hampstead & District Railways' whilst on the pediment above the entrance is the early 'Underground' logo. A map on the left advertises 'Fastest Route, Cheapest Fare'. The ornate street lights supports seem to be without their lamps, but there is a smaller one on the traffic island, protected by bollards. There is horse dung on the road. A lone male figure, wearing a military peaked cap and carrying a case and a greatcoat over his shoulder is about to cross the road.
