Title
Hungerford House on Victoria Embankment
Description
View of the front elevation of Hungerford House, Victoria Embankment, Westminster. Grade II listed, listing number 1237857, it was built in 1900 by the LCC as an electricity generating station for street lighting, in what is called Arts and Crafts Free Style Baroque. Charing Cross (now Embankment) tube station is to the left. Above the main entrance is a semicircular pediment with a high relief sculpture and the roof has dormer windows and a cupola vent on the ridge. There is graffiti in chalk below the left hand semicircular window, apparently in chalk, saying 'Scotland' (crossed through), 'England' and 'USA'. By the ornate entrance to the tube station, a man and woman appear to be studying a poster and on its right hand side is a newspaper seller's kiosk. A girder behind the facade has a capital 'R' on it. A Ford Cortina Mk lll estate is parked and there is an old style sign post indicating the directions to Parliament Square and Trafalgar Square.
