The former St James's and Pall Mall Electric Light Company Ltd electricity works in Carnaby Street
Description
A view of the front and side of the Victorian three to four-storey brick building which was once the St James's and Pall Mall Electric Light Company Ltd electricity works in Carnaby Street, Soho. The side of the building was situated in Ganton Street, Soho which can be seen on the far left of the photograph. Built into the roof of the side of the building can be seen dormer window and the upper-level window frames on the building are stylistically similar to the Regency style of architecture. The St James's and Pall Mall Electric Light Company which became a public company in 1888 supplied electricity to homes and businesses. The company later became part of the London Power Company in 1925 and then the British Electricity Authority after the nationalisation of electricity supply in 1947. The building which was built c1890s closed in c1922 and was empty for many years. Attached to the building can be seen a flagpole. In front of the building can be seen a road sign containing the words 'NO WAITING' and details of time restrictions written on a smaller plaque beneath the main sign. Above the sign can be seen a circular mirror. The building no longer exists and was eventually replaced by a four-storey building with ground floor shops in c1970s-c1980s.
