Title
Festival of Britain construction site on South Bank
Description
Construction of the Festival of Britain site, Waterloo Road, Waterloo by Waterloo Bridge. Held in the Summer of 1951, The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition of manufactured products and fair, intended to lift the spirits of post-war Britain, still in the grasp of austerity and rationing. More than eight million visited the main Festival site on London's South Bank. Here, the perimeter wall of the site is being constructed by FITZPATRICK CONCRETE PILING CIVIL ENGINEERS CONTRACTORS. Below the wall are single-storey storage buildings remaining from the demolished Howley Place tenement buildings that occupied this site. In the middle distance is the chimney of Lett's Wharf, now the site of the National Theatre and the top of Routemaster bus on Waterloo Road. The six-storey building on the right is Cornwall House, built in reinforced concrete between 1912 and 1915 for Her Majesty's Stationery Office, with tunnels connecting it to nearby Waterloo Station. It is now part of Kings College London Campus. The Shell Centre was later built on this site, now known as the White House Apartments.
