Title
View of East Row leading to Park Yard
Description
View of the passage on East Row, North Kensington, leading to Park Yard beyond. On the extreme left of the image, rough land can be seen where houses have been demolished as part of slum clearance. Number 4 East Row, the first door on the left, leads to an upstairs flat which is above the passage. The sign above the passage reads ‘Park Yard, East Row W10’. The house on the right is 5 East Row as houses on this road were numbered consecutively. There are four bottles of milk on the doorstep. A wooden cart can be seen on the left in the yard, and a motor vehicle on the right. A flight of steps rises from right to left in the background. The building behind the steps was Adelco Electrical Works on Bosworth Road. Park Yard was a small housing area between East Row and Bosworth Road which was demolished after 1953 as part of slum clearance. A closer view of the yard can be seen on image number 85917, showing a different cart, but the same vehicle, registration number EBL600. Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park, which originally opened in 1914 but was extended after slum clearance, now occupies this land. It is notable as the starting point for the annual Notting Hill Carnival in August. The park was named after a local councillor Emslie John Horniman who employed C. F. A. Voysey to design a walled garden in the Arts and Crafts style. The walls and shelters by Voysey are Grade II listed; listing number 1080640.
