Title
Drapers' Hall Gardens in Throgmorton Avenue
Description
A view of a lunette in the wall of Drapers' Hall Gardens from Throgmorton Avenue, City of London. The gardens belong to the Drapers' Hall. The land formerly belonged to Thomas Cromwell, but was purchased by the Drapers' Company from Henry VII after Cromwell's fall. The layout of the garden is largely as it was in 1928 with paving, formal raised rose beds, a fountain and trees including black mulberry trees and a Japanese mulberry. The boundary railings and gates were designed by Stephen E. Dykes Bower and erected in 1972. The design for the lunette was based on an eighteenth-century fanlight in the Drapers' Hall. It has subsequently been turned into a gated entrance. On the other side of the garden is the rear of 26 Austin Friars and behind that the NatWest Tower (now Tower 42) is under construction.
