Title
View of Gower's Walk
Description
A view looking south down Gower's Walk, Whitechapel, with the former Commercial Road Goods Depot on the right. It was built between 1884 and 1887 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway Company as a receiving and forwarding depot for merchandise dealt with at the East and West India Dock Company's Tilbury Docks, which opened in 1886. It comprised ground-level vaults with viaduct-level sidings, a shunting yard just behind the wall seen here, a branch line and a goods station below the colossal warehouse. From 1923 the lower levels served as general stores and the warehouse above was bonded and used by the Port of London Authority. Known as the Tilbury Shelter, it served as London's largest air-raid shelter during World War II. In November 1940 the warehouse received a direct hit destroying most of the roof and much of the top floor. The depot ceased operations in 1967 and was demolished in 1975. The site was redeveloped for the National Westminster Bank as a computer centre. Latterly it has once again been redeveloped with tall blocks of housing. There are various cars and vans parked in Gower's Walk, which can be seen to be cobbled. The buildings on the left have all been replaced.
