Title
Cottages in Collingwood Street
Description
View of 72-80 Collingwood Street, Southwark. A terrace of timber-framed two-storey weatherboarded cottages with attics and pantiled roofs. The ground floor has windows with shutters. Known locally as 'Fisherman's Cottages' but with no historical basis. Records of the cottages exist from 1823 although they date from the late eighteenth century. In 1823 they were known as numbers 49-53 Collingwood Street West. The numbers were altered to 1-5 in 1842, and to 80-72 in 1886, and the name of the road was changed to Colombo Street in 1937. Number 80 was demolished in 1939 but although the others remained until 1948, they were so severely damaged by bombing they were demolished. The site is now occupied by The Colombo Centre.
