Title
Cafe and houses in Park Road
Description
This view shows a row of buildings on the south side of Park Road at the centre of the historic village of Hampton Wick in the correspondingly named conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Number 1, seen here trading as Ted's Cafe is believed to have been built by Robert Belchamber in 1850, who subsequently opened it as the Prince of Wales Beer Tavern and it has been used as a coffee tavern or a cafe until the 1970s. Currently, it is operating as an office of David Howard Chartered Accountants. Belchamber is also thought to have been responsible for the cottages at numbers 3 and 5, but number 7, built around the same time, was by William Worrell, a solicitor's managing clerk. All are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. Beyond can be seen Avondale and Myrtle Cottages, which date from the same period. Two girls in dark coats can be seen standing in front of number 3, looking towards the viewer.
