Title
Billingsgate Market and Custom House
Description
A view of Billingsgate Fish Market and Custom House from the river, City of London. There has been a market on the site of Billingsgate since the eleventh century, though the current building - on the left - was built in 1872/3. It was designed by Sir Horace Jones and was Grade II listed in 1980; listing number 1358911. Several barges are moored in front of the building. A custom house, used for the collection of customs duties, has been present in the area since the fourteenth century, and a building on this site has been rebuilt a number of times. This version - on the right - was designed by David Laing and built from 1813-17. It was Grade I listed in 1972; listing number 1359153. Behind it can be seen the tower of the Bowring Building, which contained offices above an underground car and coach park. This was built in 1966 and demolished in 1999.
