Interior of Battersea Rise House in Battersea Rise
Description
View of the school room at Battersea Rise House, including paintings on the walls and easels, tables with books, a globe, chairs and rugs. This room has high ceilings with elaborate decorative cornices and a period window with a stained glass coat of arms in the centre. Battersea Rise House was built c1770 and was sold c1907, after which it was demolished. It was known as the home of Henry Thornton (1760-1815) and for a time William Wilberforce (1759-1833), both members of the Clapham Sect, an evangelical Anglican group formed to lobby for the abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and who held meetings in the house. Houses at the north end of Muncaster and Canford Roads now cover the site of Battersea Rise.
