View of Bankside
Description
View looking east along Bankside. On the right is number 53, Samuel Isaacs & Sons Iron Merchant, with a wooden sign above the entrance and a horse-drawn cart next to the river. Next is 50-52, offices of Phoenix Wharf, built in 1712 and consolidated into two buildings after being damaged during the Blitz. The tall, white building is Cardinal's Wharf, number 49, with a sign for Elliott, Huches and Easter. Below the sign, with a street lamp above it and a man and boy looking down it, is the entrance to Cardinal Cap Alley. The alley still exists but was gated at the northern end in 1989. In the distance on the left of the picture is Southwark Bridge and the arched iron and glass entrance to Cannon Street railway station. Number 49, and the railing outside, was Grade II listed in 1950, listing number 1376548. Numbers 50 and 52 were also Grade II listed in 1950, listing number 1376549. Southwark Bridge was Grade II listed in 1995, listing number 1385913.
