View of Old Broad Street
Description
A view of Old Broad Street, City of London, looking towards the nineteenth-century Midland Bank, 119-122 Old Broad Street with it's twentieth-century re-modelled ground floor front. On the left is the London Stock Exchange, Stock Exchange Tower, 125 Old Broad Street a modern office block of 1970 designed by Trollope & Colls. On the right can be seen 9-11 Old Broad Street starting with the early twentieth-century brick built five-storey neo-classical offices of the bankers Lazard Brothers & Co. Ltd at 10-11 Old Broad Street. The neighbouring four-storey Grade II* listed National Westminster Bank at 9 (now 5) Old Broad Street of 1922-1936 was designed by Mewes and Davis in the italianate classical style using portland stone. Features include the first floor central window consisting of square panes surmounted by a triangular pediment and the ground floor arched windows and entrance with a metal grill fan light. The adjacent early twentieth-century seven-storey 2-3 Old Broad Street contains bay windows with classical rectangular ionic columns rising between the windows from the second to the third floor. Extending from the buildings are flag poles. Behind the Stock Exchange Tower is the Grade II listed arched High Victorian Gothic entrance to Austin Friars at 123 Old Broad Street. The street contains city workers, two delivery vans and a delivery bicycle. Most buildings remain though number 10-11 has now been replaced by a newer building housing the Virgin Active Bank Health Club. The front of the former National Westminster Bank at number 9 has been altered in a nineteenth-century french style and is now used as offices. The former Stock Exchange Tower, 125 Old Broad Street was re-modelled c2007. The Midland Bank was replaced by a traditional style building in 1993.
