Buildings in Old Broad Street and Throgmorton Street
Description
A view looking into Throgmorton Street, City of London from Old Broad Street, City of London with the five-storey Victorian Gothic nineteenth-century 123 Old Broad Street with the archway leading to Austin Friars on the right and Trollope and Colls' London Stock Exchange, Stock Exchange Tower of 1970 at 125 Old Broad Street on the left of the photograph. On the far right of the photograph can be seen a part of the side of the nineteeth-century Midland Bank Ltd at 119-122 Old Broad Street. Various nineteenth-century buildings can be seen in the distance down Throgmorton Street including the nineteenth-century Grade II* listed Drapers Hall, home of the Worshipful Company of Drapers at 27-28 Throgmorton Street. 123 Old Broad Street contains various elements of gothic architecture including piers surmounted by capitals decorated with foliage and sash and dormer windows. The archway to Austin Friars consists of a shouldered segmental arch on corbels with rectangular columns surmounted by capitals containing carved foliage on either side. The name 'Austin Friars' has been carved onto stone scrolls above the arch either side of a carved City of London shield. The original 1970s facade of the Stock Exchange Tower can be seen which was replaced by a glass front in c2007. A man can be seen on a bicycle. Cars can be seen in the distance. A Do Not Enter road sign can be seen on the left of the picture and some metal rubbish bins and rubbish can be seen by the arch to Austin Friars. The buildings remain though the Stock Exchange Tower is now known as 125 Old Broad Street and is no longer occupied by the London Stock Exchange. 123 Old Broad Street became a pub known as the Phoenix and The Midland Bank was replaced by a new office building in c1993.
