Title
House in Nelson Square
Description
Front elevation of 26 Nelson Square, Newington, in the northeast corner of the square. Samuel Pepys Cockerell was most likely the designer of the substantial Georgian square and garden, built c1808-14. Between 1814-15 the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was a tenant at 26 Nelson Square, AS commemorated with a blue plaque. It is not evident in this photograph, and the front door of number 26 does not exist here either (compare with 114742). The differences suggest this may be an earlier photograph. The square was badly hit by World War II bombing and although number 26 survived, it was demolished with the remains of the square in the 1950s. The site was redeveloped by the LCC as Nelson Square Gardens c1956-64, to provide much needed postwar housing, and is still extant. A Historic Southwark plaque for Shelley is attached to the north end of Applegarth House, approximately where number 26 used to stand.
