View of Pelham Crescent
Description
View of the west side of Pelham Crescent, South Kensington, with number 15 on the right. 15-27 Pelham Crescent is Grade II* listed; listing number 1357470. A curved Georgian stucco terrace by George Basevi built c1825. The houses have three storeys plus basement, with steps up to the front doors, iron area railings and first-floor balcony railings. The doors have pilasters with stylised palm leaf decoration at the top. All the houses have an attic storey with a stone balustrade, and high chimneys on the roofline. The terrace is very dilapidated with peeling paint and broken stucco. There are several 'To Let' signs on the houses and there is a traditional gas lamp on the pavement. A 1940s fire hydrant sign is on the garden wall in the foreground; it is diamond shaped which indicated that the hydrant was immediately in front of the plate, rather than being across the road. In 1938 a number was added to the ‘H’ to show the distance the hydrant was from the sign; hydrant signs from those days were usually blue and white. The access cover can be seen on the pavement. This photo was taken during World War II and there is a striped pole on the pavement with an ‘S’ and an arrow pointing to the house. This sign indicated that there was an air raid shelter in the basement. A more modern view of this terrace can be seen on image number 85884.
