View of Pelham Crescent
Description
View of the east side of Pelham Crescent from Fulham Road, South Kensington, with number 1 on the right. 1-14 Pelham Crescent is Grade II* listed; listing number 1065887. A curved Georgian stucco terrace by George Basevi built c1825. The houses have three storeys plus basement, with steps up to the front doors, iron area railings and first-floor balcony railings. All the houses have an attic storey with a stone balustrade, and high chimneys on the roofline. A house in the middle seems to have a small flagpole on the top storey. The terrace is very dilapidated with peeling paint and broken stucco. Number 7 has a ‘House and Garage To Let’ sign; the agent is Harrods. A stone pillar on the left has an ornamental urn on top and the notice ‘stick no bills’ on the side. Interestingly, there is a sign posted on the pillar. The pillar on the opposite side of the crescent can be seen on image number 85742. A traditional gas lamp is on the corner near a pillar box (letter box) which has a sign on top pointing to the nearest Post Office on Fulham Road. This photo was taken during World War II and on the railings near the pillar box is an ‘air raid shelter’ sign which indicates the air raid shelter in the basement of a house further round the crescent seen on image number 85911.
