Buildings in Nicholas Lane
Description
A view of the fronts of 33-34 Nicholas Lane, City of London, as seen from Nicholas Passage.

The four-storey Grade II listed Royal Bank of Scotland at 34 Nicholas Lane dates from the late nineteenth-century and displays elements of the Beau-Arts and Italianate architectural styles with neo-classical features. Sash windows are evident at the top of the building as is an arched dormer window in the roof.

A decorative carved border containing a scroll pattern surmounts the ground floor. The front includes two masked keystones (carved faces), one on the arch above the entrance and the other surmounting the first floor window.

The entrance contains wooden framed doors with glass windows and is surmounted by a triangular pediment. The neighbouring building at number 33 designed by T.E. Collcutt and dating from 1875 is similar in style to that of the arts and crafts period with hints of the middle ages and flower motifs on the brickwork at the top of the building and in the roof and windows below it.

Thomas Edward Collcutt designed a number of London buildings including the Palace Theatre (1891) at Cambridge Circus. On the left can be seen the granite clad structure of the building which was built on the site of churchyard of St Nicholas Acon (destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666) which was a public open space until the 1960s. A one way road sign can be seen to the right of the entrance to number 34.

The buildings still survive though the ground floor window at 33 Nicholas Lane was replaced by a metal gate and gateway leading to the courtyard behind it. Number 33 Nicholas Lane was also incorporated into the neighbouring building. The concrete building on the site of St Nicholas Acon has since been replaced by a late twentieth-century office building.
