Title
St Mary's clock tower in Newington Butts
Description
The upper section of the southwest face of St Mary's clock tower, Newington Butts, clad in scaffolding and fenced off. The site was previously occupied by the Church of St Mary Newington, which was demolished in 1876 to allow the widening of Newington Butts. The Gothic style clock tower was built in 1877 to mark the site of the church and was demolished in 1971 as it had fallen into disrepair and was considered unsafe. St Mary's churchyard was landscaped by Southwark Council in 2007 and is now a park and gardens, with two memorial plaques from the tower marking its site.
