Title
Buildings in Charing Cross Road
Description
A view of the front elevations of buildings on the west side of Charing Cross Road at the junction with Oxford Street. On the far left, part of a warehouse serving the adjoining Crosse & Blackwell jam and pickle factory can be seen. The company occupied several sites in the area. On the left at number 153 (later renumbered 167) is the Excelsior pub offering Bass & Co's pale ale and Burton ale. This was Kings Head by 1759, the address formerly being given as 35 Crown Street. It was rebuilt in 1889, by which time the address had become 153 Charing Cross Road, and it was renamed the Excelsior. The ground floor served in its final days as a sex shop. To its right is the London Fur Company and then Thompson Bros men's tailors. A horse-drawn goods carriage is stopped at the left and near the junction, another as well as a carriage carrying passengers on its upper deck. One is a man in a top hat. Many pedestrians can be seen. In the distance towards the right are buildings on the north side of Oxford Street. The Crosse & Blackwell building depicted dated from about 1893. It was converted about 1927 into the Astoria theatre at number 157. All the buildings were demolished about late 2009 to make way for the expansion of Tottenham Court Road station.
